This past week the ten 3rd/4th graders who join me on Tuesday evenings right after school spent some time looking at the Synthesis of the Mass material, a work they had each seen at some point in the past few years. After laying out the first few items/objects which represent some of the most important moments of the Mass, we paused to ponder the moment of consecration when we hear the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, prayed by the priest. The chart for this work summarizes this moment of the Mass as follows: "The priest repeats the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ who gives all of himself to all people of all times." Pausing here, I asked the children what this might mean, "all people of all times." Everyone had something to say. While I cannot give you exactly what they said, it was one of those moments where everyone participated and no one wanted to move on. They were content to just enjoy this truth, recalling their knowledge of Jesus' great love for all people. I pushed them: "ALL people??" The resounding response was "YES. Even when we sin. Even when we don't know Jesus. Even when we do something that isn't ok. He still loves." It was a very beautiful moment enjoying this great truth together.
