A Moment in Time (L3)

10/26/2022

After working with the Synthesis of the Mass together a few weeks ago, only one child chose to stay and begin making a missal. But every child had something in mind to return to either from the previous week or from several weeks back. Here is a taste of the variety of their work with pictures taken over the course of about sixty seconds.
Picture
Two girls had laid out the Fettuccina, placing the text cards onto the strip in order. One child is making a booklet of this work, putting it into her own words and illustrating it.
Picture
One child returned to the Books of the Bible material and used her Bible to restore the books in order.
Picture
Two boys returned to work on copying the Individual Gifts Strip. They finished by the end of Atrium and went directly into looking up Scriptures of Jesus' Infancy, copying them from the Bible "to make a book."
Picture
Finally, two boys chose to set up the Model Altar and label the items. In need of a challenge I invited them to take out all of the altar cards, mix them up, and label them.
Picture
Two children, after seeing the Gifts Strip, decided to make a list of gifts of creation that work together like flowers and bees. I cannot wait to see their list!
Picture
The child who remained with the Synthesis of the Mass chose to restore the materials but keep out the text cards, putting them in order. He then began copying and illustrating each prayer.
Picture
One child returned to his chosen follow-up to the Individual Gifts strip, summarizing its content in his own words and illustrating it.

After the pictures and labels had been completed they moved right into matching the definitions to the cards.

The Synthesis of the Mass in L3

10/19/2022

This past week the ten 3rd/4th graders who join me on Tuesday evenings right after school spent some time looking at the Synthesis of the Mass material, a work they had each seen at some point in the past few years. After laying out the first few items/objects which represent some of the most important moments of the Mass, we paused to ponder the moment of consecration when we hear the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, prayed by the priest. The chart for this work summarizes this moment of the Mass as follows: "The priest repeats the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. The bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ who gives all of himself to all people of all times." Pausing here, I asked the children what this might mean, "all people of all times." Everyone had something to say. While I cannot give you exactly what they said, it was one of those moments where everyone participated and no one wanted to move on. They were content to just enjoy this truth, recalling their knowledge of Jesus' great love for all people. I pushed them: "ALL people??" The resounding response was "YES. Even when we sin. Even when we don't know Jesus. Even when we do something that isn't ok. He still loves." It was a very beautiful moment enjoying this great truth together.

Practical Life in the Atrium, continued

10/5/2022

To continue the theme of EPL, here is another example of an EPL shelf. In this Atrium space there are many new children and thus there are more preliminary materials offered at the beginning of the year. When the EPL materials are shifted there will be space to bring out those works which will help the child to care for their environment: polishing, cleaning up a spill, cleaning a table, etc.
