The Annunciation:
- "Like you can't describe God's greatness." "He's the most high!" "He will be great." "His name will be Jesus." "There's such joy! A baby brings great joy!"
- "Something small (Jesus) was the most high."
- "Something small was turned into something great. Mary probably didn't have very much money. She probably just lived in rags, in a small little house with a carpenter but when the angel appeared to her she became the Mother of God!"
- "Jesus was smaller than a mustard seed, but Elizabeth said Mary was blessed because she had the Messiah in her tummy."
- "Wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger doesn't sound important." "But he is the Lord!" "And the Messiah!"
- "He was small and poor. But he wanted to be poor."
- "Jesus is a king." "He's going to fight spiritual wars." "He's a king who teaches." "His soldiers are saints and angels."
- "And the shepherds - so small and so great! They were just normal shepherds and they got to witness the coming of Jesus!" "They became great shepherds!"
- "In the Bible it said the shepherds told people, and I bet the people probably didn't believe them because they maybe thought, 'Shepherds??'" "So are the shepherds saints?" Catechist: "Do you think that seeing the angel, hearing what they had to say, and seeing Jesus changed the shepherds?" Children: "Maybe they are at least blessed." "The shepherds proclaimed the greatness of the Lord!"
- "The star looked very small but it was very bright." "But a star is really bigger than the earth." "The angels and saints were watching the star too and were watching as it moved over the place where Jesus was."
- "They bowed down because they knew he was the Son of God and he would save many people." "They knew he was the king of the universe."
- "They brought gold because they thought he was a great king who would be in a castle." "They brought myrrh that you put on someone that you love who died." "Frankincense is given to God." Catechist: "Those seem like strange gifts for a little boy." Children: "They were saying, 'We love you.'" "They were saying, 'You are God but not God the Father.'"
- "Simeon was saying, 'You can let me die because I've seen Jesus.'" "He never saw Jesus when he was older, when he grew up, but only when he was small."
What a gift that the great God would come in such a humble, tiny way, and, at the same time, take humble, tiny people and make them so very, very great.
