The Exsultet

4/30/2025

After enjoying the Liturgy of the Light celebration together I invited the L3 children to share a line of our prayer which stood out to each of them. The following lines were mentioned, after which I've included their comments / conversation:

Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her,
ablaze with light from her eternal King,
let all corners of the earth be glad,
knowing an end to gloom and darkness.

  • Rejoice!!
  • We are rejoicing and the church has a lot of light.
  • Everyone is rejoicing. And all of creation! This is like all the nations are rejoicing so millions and millions of peoples.

It is truly right and just, with ardent love of mind and heart
and with devoted service of our voice,
to acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father,
and Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten.

  • It’s right and just with all our hearts to praise Him.

Who for our sake paid Adam's debt to the eternal Father,
and, pouring out his own dear Blood,
wiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness.

  • Since Adam sinned, the Father paid Jesus to make up for it.
  • It tells us we should learn to love others, to act like He did.

This is the night
that with a pillar of fire
banished the darkness of sin.

  • It’s saying when Jesus rose the light banished our bad thoughts on the inside.

This is the night,
when Christ broke the prison-bars of death
and rose victorious from the underworld.

  • It’s like we are in a jail of sin and when He dies He destroys sin.

O wonder of your humble care for us!
O love, O charity beyond all telling,
to ransom a slave you gave away your Son!
  • You should hold your son higher than your slave. But God loved us.

O truly necessary sin of Adam,
destroyed completely by the Death of Christ!
O happy fault
that earned so great, so glorious a Redeemer!

  • The sin of Adam is destroyed so we can go to heaven.
  • Maybe Adam's sin is necessary because the devil wouldn’t have been destroyed and we wouldn’t have heaven if Adam had never sinned.
  • If Adam hadn’t sinned, someone else would have.
  • Maybe it was necessary for Adam to sin for Jesus to come.
  • If Adam hadn't sinned Jesus wouldn’t have come to teach and people wouldn’t have understood so much.
  • Adam's sin earned such a great redeemer.
  • If Adam hadn’t sinned, Jesus wouldn’t have opened the gates of heaven.
  • In the beginning of creation, in the Garden of Eden, Satan was there so it couldn’t have been heaven so it’s better that Adam sinned so Jesus could come and defeat the devil.

The sanctifying power of this night
dispels wickedness, washes faults away,
restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners,
drives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.

  • I really like the image of Him taking away all the wickedness and washing faults away like in confession. He gives joy to those who are sad.

Therefore, O Lord,
we pray you that this candle,
hallowed to the honor of your name,
may persevere undimmed,
to overcome the darkness of this night.

  • Jesus is so powerful and full of light that it can overcome darkness.

The Armor of Light

4/16/2025

In the L3 (3rd/4th - 6th grade) Atrium, we are invited to consider our responsibility in caring for our Baptismal gifts each Lent. This five week serious of Scripture meditations begins by pondering the following two Scripture passages:
  • “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8).
  • "Let us then throw off the works of darkness [and] put on the armor of light" (Romans 13:12).
Throughout the weeks of Lent we look at what Maxims will help us to "put on" that armor or care for the Baptismal gifts we have been privileged to receive. During our fourth session this year we also looked at the gift of Reconciliation as a sacrament of healing, a miracle like the one done by Jesus in Matthew 9:1-8. Or is there just one miracle in that Scripture passage? One group of children, this year, counted four miracles in those eight verses. Below you will see the prayer table and materials which we enjoyed together during our fourth Armor of Light meditation as well as some of the children's choices when invited to choose a Maxim, Scripture verse, and/or Act of Contrition to help guide their work of "putting on" their armor outside of the Atrium for that week.

The Found Sheep

4/9/2025

After reading the Parable of the Found Sheep to a 4yo, but before asking any questions, the child said:
  • "He knew right where he was. He didn't have to look very hard or long." (4yo)

While reviewing the Good Shepherd and the Found Sheep with a 5yo, the child said:
  • "He looked until He found him and then He went to the Lord's table and celebrated." (5yo)
